Blue Club

Blue Club

Blue Club (sometimes spelled “Blue Team Club” or “Neapolitan Club”) is the legendary Italian bidding system that powered the Blue Team (Squadra Azzurra) to over a dozen world championships.

History

Developed by Eugenio Chiaradia in Naples in the 1950s, Blue Club was adopted by the Italian Blue Team and became synonymous with Italian dominance in world bridge for two decades. The system was refined by Benito Garozzo and others into a precision instrument.

Core Structure

Blue Club is a strong club system—the 1♣ opening is artificial and shows a strong hand.

Opening Meaning

1♣ 17+ HCP, any distribution (forcing)

1♦ Either 12-16 balanced OR 4+♦, 12-16

1♥/1♠ 12-16 HCP, 4+ cards in suit

1NT 13-15 HCP balanced

2♣ 12-16 HCP, 6+♣ (natural weak)

2♦ 17-24 HCP, 4441 distribution

2♥/2♠ Weak two (5-11 HCP, 6 cards)

The Strong 1♣

After 1♣, responder bids:

Response Meaning

1♦ Negative: 0-5 HCP

1♥/1♠ 6+ HCP, 4+ cards in suit

1NT 6-8 HCP, balanced, no 4-card major

2♣/♦ 6+ HCP, 5+ cards in suit

The bidding is forcing until game after any positive response.

4-Card Majors

Unlike Standard American’s 5-card majors, Blue Club opens 1♥/1♠ with just 4 cards. This allows finding 4-4 major fits more easily but complicates responder’s decisions.

The Canapé Style

A distinctive feature: when opener has two suits, they often bid the shorter suit first (canapé). This is the opposite of Standard American. For example, with 4 hearts and 5 diamonds, opener bids 1♥ first, then shows diamonds.

Why “Blue”?

The name comes from the Italian national team’s nickname, the Blue Team (Squadra Azzurra), named for Italy’s national color (blue).

Modern Status

Pure Blue Club is rarely played today, even in Italy. However, many of its innovations influenced modern systems: – Precision Club borrowed the strong 1♣ concept – Canapé methods appear in various expert systems – The relay structures influenced later artificial bidding
