Understanding Hand Evaluation
HCP — The Foundation
High Card Points (4-3-2-1 for A-K-Q-J) are the basis of hand evaluation. 40 HCPs in the deck — game typically needs 25-26 HCP combined, slam needs 33+.
Distribution Matters
Shape adds value. Long suits produce extra tricks. Short suits (voids, singletons) are powerful in trump contracts — add 3 for void, 2 for singleton, 1 for doubleton when supporting partner.
Playing Tricks
Tricks you can win based on the cards you hold. AKQ = 3 tricks; KQJ = 2; a 6-card suit with top honors can produce 5+ tricks. Key for pre-emptive and game bidding decisions.
