Hand Evaluation
By Bridgetastic
Quick Summary
Updated March 2026 with the latest strategies and examples.
Hand evaluation is how you assess your hand’s strength. Points alone aren’t enough , shape, honors, and fit all matter.
High Card Points (HCP)
The basic counting system:
Card Points
Ace 4
King 3
Queen 2
Jack 1
Total in deck: 40 HCP (10 per suit)
Example
♠AK74 ♥Q93 ♦KJ5 ♣A84
Count: A(4) + K(3) + Q(2) + K(3) + J(1) + A(4) = 17 HCP
Distribution Points
Shape adds value:
Feature Points
Void (0 cards) 3
Singleton (1 card) 2
Doubleton (2 cards) 1
Add distributional points when you have a fit!
Example
♠AK9742 ♥5 ♦KJ53 ♣A4
HCP: 4+3+3+1+4 = 15 HCP Distribution: Singleton heart = +2 Total: 17 points with fit
When Distribution Counts More
Distributional points matter most when: – You’ve found a trump fit – Playing in a suit contract – Partner has shown length in your short suit
Distributional points matter less when: – Playing notrump – No fit found – Your short suit is partner’s long suit
Adjustments
Upgrade For
-
Aces and Kings , Better than queens and jacks
-
Honors together , KQ is better than K…Q separate
-
5-card suits , Add 1 point
-
Good spot cards , 10s and 9s help
-
Strong intermediates , QJ10 is almost as good as K
Downgrade For
-
4-3-3-3 shape , Flat hands are worth less
-
Isolated honors , Kx in partner’s short suit
-
Quacks , QJ facing partner’s singleton
-
Jack doubleton , Almost worthless
The Rule of 20
For opening light hands: Add HCP + length of two longest suits
If total ≥ 20, consider opening.
Example
♠AQ974 ♥5 ♦KJ853 ♣74
HCP: 4+2+3+1 = 10 Longest suits: 5 + 5 = 10 Total: 20 → Open 1♠
Total Points
For game decisions, count “total points”:
Level Points Needed
Part score 20-25
3NT 25-26
4M 26
5m 29
Small slam 33
Grand slam 37
Losing Trick Count (LTC)
Advanced method: Count losers instead of points.
A loser = Missing A, K, or Q in first 3 cards of each suit.
Example
♠AK974 ♥Q3 ♦K853 ♣74
-
Spades: 1 loser (Q missing)
-
Hearts: 1 loser (A or K missing from Qx)
-
Diamonds: 2 losers (A and Q missing)
-
Clubs: 2 losers (A and K missing from xx) Total: 6 losers
Using LTC
Combined losers of partnership = 24 minus that = tricks.
If you have 6 losers and partner has 7: 24 – 13 = 11 tricks = slam!
Work Counts
Another method for suit contracts:
Holding Work Count
Ace 2
King 1
Void 2
Singleton 1
18+ work count = game
Fit Adjustments
Once you find a fit, revalue:
Shortness in Partner’s Suit
♠AK974 ♥5 ♦K853 ♣A74
Partner shows hearts → Your singleton is worth less
Length in Partner’s Suit
♠AK974 ♥Q93 ♦K85 ♣74
Partner shows hearts → Your Qxx is worth more

Build Better Hand Evaluation Habits
Counting to 13 HCP is easy. Knowing when your 12-point hand plays like a 15 (or your 14 plays like an 11) takes reps with good feedback.
