Matchpoint Strategy
By Bridgetastic
Quick Summary
Updated March 2026 with the latest strategies and examples.
In matchpoint scoring (duplicate bridge), you compete against other pairs holding your cards. Every trick matters, overtricks win, undertricks lose.
How Matchpoints Work
Your result is compared to every other pair: – Beat another pair = 1 matchpoint – Tie another pair = 0.5 matchpoints – Lose to another pair = 0 matchpoints
If 10 pairs play the same board and you beat 8, tie 1, lose to 1: 8 + 0.5 + 0 = 8.5 matchpoints out of 9
The Matchpoint Mindset
Every Trick Matters
At IMPs/rubber: Making 4♠ is making 4♠. At matchpoints: Making 4♠+1 beats everyone making 4♠=.
Go for overtricks when safe!
Frequency Matters More Than Size
+100 vs -100 = 200 point swing (fine) +100 vs +110 = 10 point swing (also costs the same matchpoints!)
At matchpoints, a 10-point swing is as costly as a 2000-point swing.
Key Principles
1. Bid the Right Game
At matchpoints, the right game is crucial:
Situation Strategy
3NT vs 4M 3NT scores more if both make
4M vs 5m 4M scores more
Part score vs game Part score if game is unlikely
3NT > 4M > 5m (for equal contracts)
2. Protect Your Plus
♠KQ74 ♥A93 ♦K85 ♣Q74
In a competitive auction, don’t turn +110 into -50 by bidding one more.
If in doubt, defend.
3. Double Partials
At matchpoints, +100 beats +90 (part score). +200 beats +110 (their making).
Consider penalty doubles more often than at IMPs.
4. Play for Overtricks
Declarer in 4♠, 10 tricks guaranteed:
-
At IMPs: Stop. Make your contract.
-
At matchpoints: Go for 11 if the risk is small.
Bidding Differences
Opening Leads Favor NT
With stoppers but no 8-card major fit: – Bid 3NT rather than finding a minor suit game – 3NT making = 600. 5♦ making = 600. But 3NT+1 = 630!
Avoid 5m
♠K4 ♥Q93 ♦AKJ74 ♣K74
With balanced hands, try 3NT before 5♦.
Upgrade for Majors
♠AQ974 ♥K93 ♦Q4 ♣Q74
Borderline game? Bid it if it’s a major.
Defensive Strategy
Set the Contract
Defense goal: Beat the contract when possible, get +50 or +100.
Lead Partner’s Suit
Normal lead = normal result. Matchpoints reward normal play.
Don’t Give Away Overtricks
♠K74 ♥Q93 ♦8542 ♣K74
Don’t lead into declarers’ tenaces hoping to beat the contract. Passive defense often best.
Declarer Play
Count Your Tricks
Know when to play safe vs. when to go for overtricks.
Finesse for Overtricks
♠AQ74 opposite ♠K32
Need 3 tricks (easy) vs. 4 tricks: – Need 3: Cash AK, no finesse – Need 4: Finesse the Q (for overtrick)
Watch the Other Tables
In your mind, ask: “What’s everyone else doing?”
