Overcall Structure

By Bridgetastic

Quick Summary

An overcall is a bid made after an opponent opens. Overcalls show a good suit and competitive values, typically 8-16 HCP depending on level and vulnerability.

Simple Overcalls

Level Points Suit Quality

1-level 8-16 Good 5+ cards

2-level 10-16 Good 5+ cards

Suit Quality Requirements

Your suit should be lead-worthy:

Good Suit Marginal Avoid

KQJ74 QJ742 87542

AJ1074 K10974 Q7432

AKJ42 AQ974 J8743

Example Overcalls

Good 1♠ Overcall

♠AQJ74 ♥K3 ♦974 ♣Q42

After (1♦): 1♠ — Good suit, 11 HCP.

Marginal (Pass or Bid?)

♠Q9742 ♥AK3 ♦74 ♣Q42

After (1♦): Pass better. Suit too weak.

2-Level Overcall

♠K3 ♥AKJ74 ♦974 ♣Q42

After (1♠): 2♥ — Need extras for 2-level.

Vulnerability Considerations

Vul vs Not Vul Adjustment

Not vul Can be lighter

Vul Need sound values

Unfavorable Very sound only

Rule: The more you can lose, the better your hand should be.

Jump Overcalls

Bid Shows

Weak jump 6+ suit, 5-10 HCP (preemptive)

Intermediate 6+ suit, 12-15 HCP (some play)

Strong 16+ (rare, old-fashioned)

Most modern players use weak jump overcalls.

Weak Jump Example

♠KQJ974 ♥74 ♦Q42 ♣74

After (1♦): 2♠ — Weak jump, 6 spades.

Overcall Responses

Partner overcalled 1♠. What do you bid?

Your Bid Shows

Pass Weak, no fit

2♠ 3+ support, 6-10

3♠ 4+ support, 10-12 (invite)

4♠ 4+ support, preemptive OR game

1NT 8-11, stopper in their suit

2NT 11-12, stopper, invitational

New suit Natural, non-forcing

Cue bid Limit raise+ (10+, 3+ support)

The Cue Bid Raise

A cue bid of opponent’s suit shows a good raise:

(1♦) - 1♠ - (Pass) - 2♦

2♦ = Limit raise or better in spades (10+, 3+ support).

1NT Overcall

1NT overcall = 15-18 HCP, balanced, stopper in their suit.

After (1♥): 1NT shows: – 15-18 HCP – Balanced – Heart stopper

When NOT to Overcall

  • Weak suit, Partner will lead it!

  • Flat hand, Consider passing

  • Both majors, Use Michaels or Unusual 2NT

  • Very strong, Double first

Key Takeaways

  • Good suit required, Lead-worthy

  • 8-16 for 1-level, Sound for 2-level

  • Vulnerability matters, Lighter not vul

  • Jump = weak (usually)

  • 1NT = 15-18 with stopper
