Responsive Doubles
By Bridgetastic
Quick Summary
Updated March 2026 with the latest strategies and examples.
A Responsive Double occurs when partner makes a takeout double, the opponent raises, and you double to show values with both unbid suits (rather than a penalty double).
The Basics
The auction:
(1♥) - X - (2♥) - X (Responsive)
Your double says: “I have values and length in the unbid suits (spades and both minors). I can’t bid just one suit, so I’m asking you to pick.”
When It Applies
Responsive doubles apply when: 1. Partner makes a takeout double 2. The opponent raises their suit 3. You have values but no clear single suit to bid
Auction Your Double Is
(1♥) – X – (2♥) – X Responsive
(1♠) – X – (2♠) – X Responsive
(1♦) – X – (2♦) – X Responsive
(1♣) – X – (2♣) – X Responsive
What You’re Showing
After a Major Raise
(1♥) - X - (2♥) - X
Shows: Values (typically 7-11 HCP) with: – Both minors (usually 4-4 or better) – No clear 5-card minor to bid – Probably some spade tolerance
After a Minor Raise
(1♦) - X - (2♦) - X
Shows: Values with: – Both majors (usually 4-4) – No clear 5-card major to bid
Example Hands
Auction: (1♥) – X – (2♥) – ?
Good Responsive Double
♠J74 ♥85 ♦KJ62 ♣AQ73
Double, 10 points, 4-4 in minors. You can’t bid just one suit.
Should Bid Instead
♠J74 ♥85 ♦KQ962 ♣A73
Bid 3♦ — With a clear 5-card suit, bid it directly.
Should Pass
♠974 ♥852 ♦J62 ♣Q973
Pass, Not enough values for any action.
Auction: (1♠) – X – (2♠) – ?
Responsive Double
♠85 ♥KJ74 ♦Q962 ♣A73
Double, 10 points with 4 hearts and scattered minors. Let partner choose.
Hearts are Clear
♠85 ♥KJ974 ♦Q62 ♣A73
Bid 3♥ — With 5 hearts, bid them rather than doubling.
Partner’s Rebids
After a responsive double, the original doubler picks their best suit:
(1♥) - X - (2♥) - X (Pass) - ?
Doubler’s Rebid Meaning
2♠ 4+ spades, minimum
3♣ 4+ clubs, minimum
3♦ 4+ diamonds, minimum
3♠ 4+ spades, extras
4♣/4♦ Great support for that minor, extras
Level Agreement
Partnerships must agree how high responsive doubles apply:
Auction Responsive?
(1♥) – X – (2♥) – X Yes (standard)
(1♥) – X – (3♥) – X Maybe (agreement needed)
(1♥) – X – (4♥) – X Usually penalty
Most pairs play responsive doubles through 3♠ or 4♦. Beyond that, doubles become penalty.
Strength Requirements
Level Minimum Points
2-level 7-8 HCP
3-level 9-11 HCP
4-level 12+ HCP
Adjust based on vulnerability and partnership style.
Responsive vs Penalty
The key distinction:
Auction Double Type
(1♥) – X – (2♥) – X Responsive (takeout style)
(1♥) – P – (2♥) – X Penalty (no prior takeout)
(1♥) – 1♠ – (2♥) – X Penalty (partner overcalled, not doubled)
Responsive doubles only occur after partner’s takeout double.
After Minor Openings
Responsive doubles work slightly differently:
(1♣) - X - (2♣) - X
Shows: Both majors, 4-4 or better. Partner picks the major.
(1♦) - X - (2♦) - X
Shows: Both majors, 4-4 or better. Same idea.
You’re unlikely to want to “find” a minor fit when the opponents open a minor, you want to find your major fit.
Common Variations
Through What Level?
-
Through 2♠ (conservative)
-
Through 3♠ (standard)
-
Through 4♦ (aggressive)
With Both Majors After Minor
Some partnerships use 2NT to show both majors instead of doubling. This frees the double for other uses. Partnership agreement needed!
Responsive vs Support Double
Don’t confuse these:
Convention Auction Meaning
Responsive (1♥) – X – (2♥) – X Both unbid suits
Support 1♣ – (1♥) – 1♠ – (2♥) – X 3-card spade support
Support doubles are by opener showing 3-card support; responsive doubles are by advancer showing two suits.
Key Takeaways
-
After partner’s takeout double + raise, your double is responsive
-
Shows both unbid suits, can’t pick one
-
Values required, not just shape
-
Agree on level — usually through 3♠
-
Partner picks the suit, you’ve shown your shape
