Forcing 1NT in Bridge: The 2/1 Game Forcing Response
By Bridgetastic
1NT Forcing
Updated March 2026 with the latest strategies and examples.
In 2/1 Game Forcing, a 1NT response to partner’s major-suit opening is forcing for one round. Opener must bid again, allowing the auction to develop further.
Why Forcing?
In 2/1, a two-level response is game-forcing (13+ HCP). But what about hands with 6-12 points? You need somewhere to put them.
The solution: 1NT is forcing, covering a wide range of hands that aren’t strong enough for 2/1.
What 1NT Forcing Shows
After 1♥ or 1♠:
Response Meaning
1NT 6-12 HCP, forcing one round
2♣/♦ 13+ HCP, game-forcing
The 1NT bid is a “catch-all” that includes: - Balanced hands without a fit - Hands with support but not enough for a limit raise - Hands with a long minor but not enough for 2/1
Opener’s Rebids
After 1♠ - 1NT (forcing):
Rebid Meaning
2♣ 3+ clubs, any strength
2♦ 4+ diamonds, any strength
2♥ 4+ hearts
2♠ 6+ spades, minimum
2NT 18-19 balanced
3♠ 6+ spades, extras
Opener MUST bid - passing 1NT forcing is not allowed.
Example: Responder’s Hand
You hold: ♠74 ♥K83 ♦QJ74 ♣J962
Partner opens 1♠.
-
2♦? No - that’s game-forcing in 2/1
-
1NT? Yes - 8 HCP, forcing, lets you hear more
After 1♠ - 1NT - 2♥, you can raise to 3♥ (invitational) with your heart support.
Responder’s Second Bid
After 1♠ - 1NT - 2♣:
Rebid Meaning
2♦ Natural, non-forcing
2♥ Natural, non-forcing
2♠ 2-card support, minimum
2NT 10-12, balanced, no fit
3♣ Club support, invitational
3♠ 3-card support, invitational
Semi-Forcing Alternative
Some pairs play 1NT as “semi-forcing” - opener CAN pass with a balanced minimum:
Method Opener Can Pass?
Forcing 1NT No, must bid
Semi-Forcing 1NT Yes, with balanced minimum
Semi-forcing gives opener more flexibility but makes responder’s life harder.
With Support
With 3-card major support and 6-10 HCP, you have options: - Simple raise: Shows 3-card support directly - 1NT forcing: Hides the fit, explores
Many players bid 1NT first with exactly 3-card support and only raise with 4+.
