Captaincy: Who Decides the Final Contract

By Bridgetastic

Quick Summary

Captaincy is the principle that in any auction, one partner becomes “captain” — the one who makes the final contract decision. The captain knows more about the combined hands.

Who Is Captain?

The captain is the player who: 1. Knows more about partner’s hand 2. Has received a limit bid or specific description 3. Makes the final decision

Classic Examples

After 1NT Opening

1NT - ?

Opener has shown 15-17, balanced. Responder is captain — They know opener’s hand. They decide.

After a Limit Raise

1♠ - 3♠ ?

Responder showed 10-12, 4 spades. Opener is captain — They know responder’s hand. They decide.

The Non-Captain’s Job

The non-captain should: 1. Describe their hand accurately 2. Answer questions truthfully 3. Not override the captain 4. Trust the captain’s decision

Example Auction

1NT - 2♣ (Stayman) 2♥ - 4♥

Opener described: 15-17, 4 hearts. Responder decided: 4♥. Responder was captain.

Opener should not bid on. Responder knows the situation.

Captain Transfer

Sometimes captaincy transfers:

1NT - 2♦ (transfer) 2♥ - 2NT ?

Now opener becomes captain — Responder showed ~8-9 invitational.

Don’t Overrule the Captain

Wrong

1NT - 3NT 4♣ ???

Responder bid 3NT (captain’s decision). Opener shouldn’t correct!

1NT - 3NT Pass

Opener passes. Responder knew what they were doing.

Bidding Above the Captain

If non-captain bids on, it’s a slam try:

1♠ - 3♠ 4♣

4♣ = “I’m not just accepting. I have extras and club control.”

Asking Bids Change Captaincy

RKCB/Blackwood temporarily gives asking partner control:

1♠ - 2NT 4NT - 5♦ ?

Opener asked, so opener decides based on the answer.

In Competitive Auctions

Captaincy can be unclear when opponents bid:

1♠ - 2♠ - (3♥) - ?

Who decides? Generally the player with undisclosed extras.

Key Takeaways

  • One partner is captain — Makes final decision

  • Know your role — Captain or describer

  • Don’t overrule — Trust the captain

  • Bidding on = extras if not captain

  • Asking bids = temporary captaincy
