Takeout Doubles
By Bridgetastic
Updated March 2026, reviewed for accuracy with current ACBL standards and modern bidding trends.
Quick Summary
A takeout double of an opponent’s opening bid asks partner to pick an unbid suit. It shows opening strength with support for the unbid suits.
Requirements
For a takeout double, you need: - 12+ points (can be less with perfect shape) - Support for unbid suits (ideally 4+ in each) - Shortness in opponent’s suit
The Classic Shape
After opponent opens 1♥, you double with:
♠KJ84 ♥3 ♦AQ72 ♣K965
This is perfect: - ✅ 14 HCP - ✅ 4+ in every unbid suit - ✅ Singleton in opponent’s suit
Partner’s Responses
After (1♥) - X - (Pass):
Points Action
0-8 Bid cheapest 4-card suit
9-11 Jump in best suit (invitational)
12+ Cue-bid 2♥ (game-forcing)
Weak Response
♠Q732 ♥854 ♦J62 ♣973
After (1♥) - X: Bid 1♠ - Must bid something. Spades is cheapest 4-card suit.
Invitational Jump
♠KJ72 ♥854 ♦A62 ♣Q73
After (1♥) - X: Bid 2♠ - Jump shows 9-11 points. Partner decides on game.
Game-Forcing Cue-Bid
♠KJ72 ♥854 ♦AK2 ♣Q73
After (1♥) - X: Bid 2♥ - Cue-bid shows 12+ and forces to game.
The 1NT Response
With a balanced hand and stopper in opponent’s suit, bid 1NT:
♠J72 ♥KJ5 ♦Q962 ♣K73
After (1♥) - X: Bid 1NT - Shows 6-10 points with heart stopper.
Doubler’s Rebids
After doubling and hearing partner’s response:
Partner Bid Your Points Action
Minimum (1♠) 12-15 Pass
Minimum (1♠) 16-18 Raise to 2♠
Minimum (1♠) 19-21 Jump to 3♠
Jump (2♠) 12-15 Pass or bid 3♠
Jump (2♠) 16+ Bid 4♠
Strong Hands (19+ Points)
With 19+ points, you’re too strong to just double. Options:
Double, Then Cue-Bid
♠AKJ4 ♥3 ♦AKJ2 ♣KJ65
(1♥) - X - (Pass) - 1♠ (Pass) - 3♠ (or 2♥ cue-bid)
Double, Then Bid New Suit
Shows 17+ with a good suit of your own:
♠AKJ84 ♥3 ♦AKJ2 ♣K65
(1♥) - X - (Pass) - 2♣ (Pass) - 2♠ (strong, 5+ spades)
When NOT to Double
Too Much Length in Opponent’s Suit
♠KJ4 ♥KQ84 ♦AJ2 ♣K65
After 1♥: Don’t double - 4 hearts! Bid 1NT or pass.
One-Suited Hand
♠AQJ984 ♥73 ♦A2 ♣K65
After 1♥: Bid 1♠ - Overcall with a good suit, don’t double.
Passed Hand Doubles
A passed hand can still make a takeout double with perfect shape:
♠KJ84 ♥3 ♦Q972 ♣K965
You passed initially. They open 1♥. Double - Shows this exact shape, 9-11 points.

Practice Your Doubles with Brian
The hardest part of takeout doubles isn’t making them. It’s responding correctly when partner doubles. How high do you bid with 9 points? When do you leave the double in for penalty? That judgment comes from practice.
